Is Homeschooling legal in Jamaica?

Yes. The Education Act of 1965 (Part III), Section 21 states: “a) It is the duty of the parent of every child of compulsory school age residing in a compulsory education area to cause him/her to receive full-time education suitable to his age, ability and satisfactory to the educational board for the area, either by regular attendance at school or otherwise.” Homeschools is considered part of “otherwise” and also straddles the Independent Schools’ Regulations 1973.

Is homeschooling different from distance/online learning?

Yes. Distant/Online Learning is the traditional school system administered through a virtual portal. Homeschooling is the versatile scholastic and character building process facilitated by flexible, responsible and well equipped family units.

Are there any curriculum or syllabus publicly available?

Yes. The Government of Jamaica's Ministry of Education and Youth (MOEY) and Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) provides such files for download.

do i need to register with the ministry of education?

Yes. The Ministry of Education requires parents to register with the Independent Schools Unit which can commence via email.

How educated must I be as a homeschool facilitator?

At least two grade levels above the student grade you are to teach.
